Best Puerto Rico Beaches
The coastline changes character every few kilometres. Reading it by coast is more useful than reading it as a top-ten list.

By coast
North — city beaches and open Atlantic water
From Condado and Ocean Park through Isla Verde and on toward Dorado and Isabela, the north coast faces the open Atlantic. That means livelier water, wider sand and beaches you can reach without leaving the metro area.
Watch for shore break and rip currents, especially in winter when northern swell arrives; the calmer pockets are the reef-protected coves like Condado's Playita and the lagoon side of Ocean Park.
East — calm bays and the departure point for the outer islands
The east coast, around Luquillo, Fajardo and the cays offshore, is protected and shallow, which makes it the best side for families, snorkelling and first-time paddlers. Luquillo's crescent bay is the classic example.
It is also the launching point for boats and ferries to Icacos, Culebra and Vieques, so a morning on the sand pairs naturally with an afternoon on the water. Facilities and parking are better developed here than in most of the island.
West — surf, sunsets and long open sand
Rincón, Aguadilla and the beaches around Isabela hold the island's surf culture and its only true ocean sunsets. Conditions swing seasonally: powerful in winter, glassy and swimmable in summer.
Look for the sheltered coves such as Crash Boat and Steps when the swell is up and you would rather snorkel than surf. Currents can be strong, so read the local flags and ask before swimming at an unfamiliar break.
South — warmer, drier and generally calmer water
The Caribbean-facing south coast, from Guánica and Cabo Rojo to Ponce and Salinas, is dry, hot and noticeably flatter in the water. Playa Sucia beneath the Cabo Rojo lighthouse is the postcard of the region.
Shade is scarce and services are thinner than on the north or east, so bring water, an umbrella and food. In exchange you get some of the emptiest sand on the main island, even on weekends.
